Overview

Katherine is an associate in Michael Best’s Tax practice. She assists clients with a wide range of tax-related matters, including corporate taxation, tax planning, federal and state income taxation, and tax exempt organizations.  Her experience includes representation of taxpayers in federal and state audits and appeals, and in matters before the U.S. Tax Court and the Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission. Katherine provides strategic counsel on tax matters contested by the Internal Revenue Service and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, including issues related to sales and use tax, income tax, business deductions, exemptions, and penalties.

With respect to tax exempt organizations, Katherine provides advice concerning complex tax, formation, governance, and compliance matters. She assists clients that range in size from small nonprofits to national organizations, including private foundations and public charities, religious organizations, educational institutions, and advocacy groups, among others. On transactional matters, her experience includes complex tax exempt structuring, mergers and consolidations, and dissolutions.  She also has extensive experience involving compliance with state charitable solicitation laws. Before joining Michael Best, Katherine completed a legal internship with the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Office of the General Counsel. Previously, she was a legal intern for the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.

While pursuing her J.D., Katherine served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Stephanie Rothstein of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
