Overview

Young focuses his practice in intellectual property. He is experienced in preparing and prosecuting patent applications involving a wide range of technologies, including, machine learning, natural language processing, blockchain, business method software, control systems, medical devices, image processing, and a variety of integrated mechanical, optical, and electronic systems. He works closely with clients to develop patent portfolios optimized for each client's strategic needs and goals.

Before joining Michael Best, Young was an associate with a full-service law firm and — before that — an associate with a large patent prosecution boutique. In those roles, he managed the parallel prosecution of patent applications across a variety of global jurisdictions, focusing on strategic portfolio management and a client-centric approach to ensure each client was offered the most cost-effective solution. Young also leverages his experience as seconded in-house counsel to a major medical device manufacturer and as associate counsel to a Department of Defense software research laboratory to deliver solutions well-tailored to specific needs of patent portfolio owners.

Prior to entering private practice, he served as a patent attorney with the U.S. Department of the Navy Office of the General Counsel where he advised a Navy research laboratory on a variety of intellectual property and contracting issues. Before embarking on a career in law, Young was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
