RNG Volumes at Landfills Lead the Way

We all produce waste that ends up in landfills. The solid waste management industry provides a vital community service every day across the nation. Waste management companies are also increasingly capturing the value of methane that is naturally produced during the decomposition of organic waste materials in landfills.

According to data recently released by the American Biogas Council (ABC), landfills are the largest source of captured renewable natural gas (RNG) in the Country. The industry is leading the way in methane capture and conversion volumes. ABC reports that nearly 600 RNG projects at landfills account for 75% of the volume of biogas captured, this despite representing only about 25% of the methane capture installations in the country. This reveals the volume of gas that can be captured at landfills, presenting a bigger “bang for the buck” opportunity. ABC reports that landfill-derived RNG supplies approximately 143.7 MMBtus annually. Many of the remaining RNG projects are installed at livestock operations and wastewater treatment facilities.
