Michael Best's Austin Head On Bush Family, Military Lessons

Law360

As he begins leading Michael Best & Friedrich LLP's Austin office, George P. Bush is drawing lessons learned not only from his prominent political family and his own time as Texas land commissioner, but also from his service in the military.

While it's not the same as the camaraderie that develops among people serving together in the heat of battle, in the law, when working together on a matter, there are certainly opportunities for building a strong team," Bush said.

"The military teaches you how to find the commonality among a team even when you're thrown together from different backgrounds," he added.

Bush is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the nephew of former President George W. Bush and the grandson of former President George H.W. Bush.

After wrapping up his second term as land commissioner at the end of 2022, Bush joined Michael Best last year as a partner and principal of its lobbying arm, Michael Best Strategies LLC. The firm announced this month that he had been named managing partner of the Austin shop.

Bush said that while he is presently committed, focused on managing and growing the Austin office and "being a good dad and family man," he is leaving the door open to future elected public service.

Law360 Pulse recently sat down with Bush to talk about his new role, his plans for the Austin office and how his past has shaped him as a leader. The responses have been edited for length and clarity.
