HR Academy

Utah manufacturers face a complex and constantly evolving landscape of employment laws and regulations that affect every aspect of the employment relationship. Missteps can reduce productivity and expose a company to liability. To assist UMA members in meeting these challenges and avoiding pitfalls, Michael Best has developed the HR Academy.

WHAT IS HR ACADEMY?

HR Academy is a series of six, two-hour sessions that address the most pressing and regularly occurring issues Utah employer’s face. These sessions are:

Session 1: Handbooks, Agreements, and Policies

In this session, participants will learn about what should and should not be in an employee handbook; agreements employers can put in place to best protect themselves; and policies every employer should have.

Session 2: The ADA and FMLA

The ADA and FMLA can be a nightmare for employers. This session addresses how these laws intersect; issues related to managing leave (including intermittent leave); common problems that arise that implicate these laws; and how to address difficult situations that involve employees with disabilities and/or serious health conditions.

Session 3: Wage & Hour Law

This session touches on every aspect of wage & hour law and includes contractor/employee classification; exempt/non-exempt classification; calculating overtime; improper deductions, etc.

Session 4: Prevent and Responding to Harassment and Discrimination Complaints

This session presents advanced training on how to avoid and respond to harassment and discrimination complaints. Participants will not just learn the basics. They will discuss real world examples of how to avoid pitfalls related to all forms of discrimination and harassment.

Session 5: Hiring and Recruitment

In this session, we discuss all aspects of the front end of employment. This includes issues related to job applications; job descriptions; background checks; offer letters; immigration compliance documents; and the onboarding process, generally.

Session 6: Incorporating a Culture of Safety into Your HR Practices

This session discusses practical steps to ensure workplace safety is at the forefront of all HR practices, effecting both a safe and healthy workplace and compliance with OSHA regulations.
