Matthew is a skilled Patent Scientist with an extensive background in chemistry. He graduated with honors from Grinnell College with a B.A. in Chemistry. After graduation, Matthew was a research associate with a drug discovery startup, Sarco, Inc., before attending Cornell University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry. Upon earning his Ph.D., Matthew joined Scripps Research as a postdoctoral associate.

While at the startup company, Matthew employed solid-phase organic synthesis to build libraries of drug-like small molecules. During graduate school, he focused on unraveling the detailed reaction mechanism of the reactive core within a potent antitumor antibiotic. In his postdoctoral work, Matthew specialized in the biophysical characterization and solid-phase synthesis of peptides and proteins.

Matthew joined Gonzaga University after his postdoctoral work. As a faculty member, Matthew’s research efforts spanned the biophysical characterization of neuropeptides, the quantum chemical analysis of reaction mechanisms, as well as the synthesis and crystal structure analysis of small molecules. Matthew has published multiple papers and given many presentations at conferences and universities. His deep background in chemistry and academic experience enable him to provide robust support to clients looking to protect their valuable innovations.
