Cyber risk isn’t an IT problem anymore; it’s a leadership problem. Over the past six months, enforcement actions have made one thing unmistakably clear: regulators aren’t simply asking <em>whether</em> an organization was breached. They’re asking <em>what leadership did to prevent it</em>. The days of treating cybersecurity as a technical silo are over. Boards and executives are now expected to demonstrate informed oversight, documented governance, and real accountability.

What we’re seeing in the field is a pattern of exposure driven not by recklessness, but by informality and by a false sense of safety. Too many organizations still believe they’re not a target, or that their data isn’t valuable enough to attract attention. Meanwhile, vendor breaches go unmonitored, data governance gaps linger because everyone assumes someone else owns them, and boards rely on “we didn’t know” as a defense, a claim that regulators have stopped accepting. So, what should leadership be doing? Start by making cybersecurity a standing board agenda item; not an annual update. Require visibility into your vendor ecosystem, not just your internal controls. Establish clear data governance ownership with reporting that leadership actually reviews. And critically, modernize the documents that define your obligations: update your privacy policy, refresh your terms of use, verify that access controls reflect current roles and responsibilities, confirm that data retention practices are actionable versus theoretical, and ensure your data breach response plan reflects today’s regulatory expectations.

Regulators don’t expect perfection, but they do expect intentionality. The organizations that treat privacy and cybersecurity as core governance responsibilities, not background IT functions are the ones that stay resilient, compliant, and trusted.
