Wei Yan, Ph.D.



Wei brings an extensive technical background to his work in patent preparation and prosecution, freedom to operate analyses, patent landscaping, and due diligence. Wei is also a member of the firm's FDA Regulatory practice. His strong track record in patent and FDA regulatory matters for clients in the pharmaceutical, health, food, and agricultural industries is based on diverse and in-depth knowledge of:

Prior to joining the firm, Wei worked as a patent attorney serving clients primarily in the life sciences and chemistry sectors. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 2005, along with eight years of research experience at the university focusing on phospholipase, biological membranes, lipid metabolism, obesity, and diabetes.


In recent engagements, Wei helped clients establish intellectual property rights in multiple countries to protect their valuable innovations; advised clients regarding patent infringement risk in their production processes; and provided counseling and documentation to help clients comply with FDA regulations.  In particular, Wei has:

  • Prosecuted U.S. and international patent applications regarding therapeutic compounds a global pharmaceutical corporation
  • Prepared and filed U.S. and international patent applications regarding insect control technology for a pioneering company for public health and environmental development
  • Prepared and filed U.S. and international patent applications regarding detergent and cleaning products for a leading company in the cleaning and hygiene business
  • Prepared and filed U.S. patent applications for university clients regarding innovative life science technologies
  • Rendered freedom to operate opinions in regard to therapeutic compounds for a specialty pharmaceutical company
  • Rendered freedom to operate opinion and counseling regarding synthetic process for natural sweetener compounds for  a start-up company focusing on bio-production of ingredients for food and pharmaceutical industries
  • Provided counseling for U.S. food companies regarding FDA food labeling requirements
  • Prepared Quality Manual in compliance with FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) for a company that develops and produces organic compounds
