Stephen A. Mason

Stephen is a trusted advisor to companies seeking to protect their intellectual property assets. He brings an in-depth knowledge and a track record of success to his work advising startups and established firms regarding their patent portfolios, particularly in the early stages of product development.

Informed by a background in electrical engineering, Stephen has spent more than a decade counseling on patent matters in a range of technologies encompassing:

  • Microprocessor and memory designs
  • Network equipment and software
  • Semiconductors
  • Testing and verification software
  • Databases and storage
  • Mobile computing and sensor systems

Stephen’s outstanding record in preparing and prosecuting patent applications includes successfully defeating numerous obviousness rejections in crowded art areas. In addition to his patentability opinions, clients value his recommendations on licensing agreements, merger and acquisitions transactions, and research contracts.

As former general counsel of an internet advertising company, Stephen also has broad experience with consumer protection and privacy law in online transactions. Before starting his career in law, he worked for a global communications company on issues related to competitive intelligence and PBX provisioning software.

Notable matters include patent portfolio counseling for:

  • A software startup centered around identity management, a crowded art space. Stephen’s strategic advice to the firm, whose initial portfolio had only six assets, contributed to the startup’s acquisition by a major company in the industry.
  • The internet advertising division of a publicly traded software company. Stephen assembled a comprehensive portfolio by identifying patentable subject matter in a space crowded with business methods.
  • The hardware division of a publicly traded computing services firm. By identifying subject matter with an above-average likelihood of detectability, Stephen assembled an extensive portfolio of patents related to processor testing and verification.
  • A publicly trading mobile telephone company. By tailoring the portfolio of the firm’s division that manufactures camera hardware to reflect supply chain realities, Stephen succeeded in assembling a comprehensive portfolio of small camera motor patents.
