Overview

Through a career spanning four decades in business, government, and law, Bob provides clients from coast to coast with uncommon strategic insight that creates clarity, establishes direction, and elevates organizational performance.

Bob offers unique skills in a specialty trade that requires both legal and business management expertise. Growth in a start-up company, mergers and acquisitions, succession in family-owned businesses, and many other reasons may create a need for a board of directors to evolve the structure of its governance. With his experience as a lawyer, a bank president, the director of a large state government agency, and as the current president of Robert C. Gross Associates, Bob provides clients with tremendous value as a senior advisor to the Michael Best Strategies team.

In law, Bob serves as senior counsel at Michael Best, and previously served as senior attorney at Jones Waldo, where he chaired the firm’s financial services practice group. He has served as an expert witness in litigated matters involving banking, financial services, and corporate governance. Bob is a highly trained and skilled mediator for complex commercial and public policy disputes, and for transactional negotiations.

Bob previously served as the president, CEO, and executive board chair of First Interstate Bank of Utah, and as president, CEO, and director of Blue Healthcare Bank. He is founder and president of Robert C. Gross Associates, a national consulting practice that partners with boards, directors, and executives to enhance executive and board leadership, corporate governance, and organizational design and performance.

In government, Bob served as chief of staff to Governor Michael O. Leavitt and as the founding executive director of the Utah Department of Workforce Services — a role in which he combined five disparate state agencies into one. Following the success of that effort, he was appointed by the George W. Bush White House to serve in Baghdad as a senior advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. Bob subsequently founded and served as the principal at Strategic Impact LLC, a government relations and public policy advisory firm.
