Richard T. Hamalainen



Rick draws on his background as an engineer to advise clients on identifying patentable subject matter for new inventions and assisting with U.S. and international patent prosecution. He counsels on patent coverage, infringement, and current legal issues. His experience spans a range of technologies, including electrical and electronic systems, automotive, embedded software, and microelectromechanical systems.

Clients appreciate Rick’s technical knowledge and problem solving when pursuing patent protection for complex technologies.    

Prior to joining the firm, Rick was an advanced stationary engineer at Harley-Davidson, Inc. where he operated and maintained facilities equipment in their manufacturing plants, corporate office buildings, and data centers.


Richard’s notable matters include:

  • Advising clients on obtaining patent protection in light of recent changes in patent law dealing with s software and business methods
  • Preparing legal and technical arguments to identify and distinguish a client’s technology within highly competitive technical fields such as automotive controls, actions which resulted in granting of multiple patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Drafting patent applications focused on particular technical innovations in light of new developments and changes in U.S. patent law
  • Providing analysis of open-source software licensing and compliance
