With more than 20 years of combined legal, technical, and business experience, Ram draws on a broad background in intellectual property matters, which includes leadership of the deal team at Research In Motion Limited in the $4.5 billion acquisition of Nortel’s patent portfolio by the Rockstar Consortium.
Ram uses this experience to assist clients in all aspects of intellectual property, from patent prosecution to licensing and IP transactions. He provides advice on patent strategy, portfolio development, valuation, monetization, enforcement, and licensing. He also drafts and negotiates commercial, software, joint development, technology transfer, patent license, IP transaction, and post-litigation settlement agreements.
He has prepared and prosecuted U.S. and international patent applications in a wide variety of technologies, including semiconductor devices and fabrication, telecommunications, circuits and systems, sensors, medical devices, power electronics, control systems, digital signal processing, memory devices, computer technology, software, and internet applications.
Prior to joining Michael Best, Ram owned an intellectual property consulting business. Before that, he was Senior Licensing Counsel for Blackberry Corporation, where he counseled senior management on a wide spectrum of IP matters. He also worked as a patent attorney for a boutique intellectual property firm in Minnesota.
Ram began his career at Bell Communications Research/Telcordia Technologies, working on optical networking technologies and standards. He also managed engineering teams on multimillion-dollar engineering projects involving the design and testing of national broadband networks in North America, Latin America, and Asia.
