Nathan is an experienced employment law attorney who focuses on defending employers in complex and sophisticated litigation matters.
As former counsel for the City of Chicago, Nathan defended the City against allegations of misconduct, harassment, discrimination, and other claims, including taking cases to trial. As a former Assistant District Attorney in Boston, he regularly interfaced with judges and other court personnel during hearings, conferences, and trials. Nathan leverages this experience to help employers evaluate and defend against allegations as well as implement programs and policies to minimize litigation risk.
Before joining Michael Best, Nathan spent four years working for the City of Chicago. As Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Department of Law, Federal Civil Rights Litigation division, he defended the City of Chicago and city employees in civil rights lawsuits alleging police misconduct before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Nathan also served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City’s Buildings and License Enforcement division, where he represented the City of Chicago in Municipal Code enforcement cases related to the public’s health and safety, including building code, police, and licensing matters in Illinois state court’s Chancery Division and before administrative bodies including the Mayor’s License Discipline Commission and the License Appeal Commission. In his previous role as EEO Investigator for the City’s Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity division, he investigated and responded to claims involving allegations related to equal employment opportunity, sexual harassment, retaliation, and violence in the workplace.
Prior to working for the City of Chicago, Nathan began his legal career in Massachusetts as an Assistant District Attorney and then Supervising ADA for the South Boston Division of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, where he previously worked as a paralegal while in law school. While pursuing his J.D., Nathan also completed legal internships with the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Before attending law school, Nathan worked in several human resources roles for Partners’ Healthcare System Inc., Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, and the former Macy’s West (now part of Macy’s, Inc.). His five-plus years in HR give Nathan a unique insider perspective of the personnel-related challenges employers face.
