Li Zhu

Li helps clients protect, enforce, and defend their global brands through strategic trademark counseling and litigation. Her practice hinges upon deep knowledge and experience with Chinese intellectual property law, policies, and businesses.

Having previously worked as an associate in the Beijing office of a global law firm and as in-house counsel to a global industrial manufacturer located in Beijing, Li offers unique perspective and insight to global intellectual property strategy and brand enforcement.

Li’s precedent-setting experience includes:

  • Strategized and executed an IP border protection case involving cross-province investigation and cooperation between China customs and police. The case was ranked "Top 10 IP Cases of 2011 in Jiangsu Province" and "Top 10 Border Protection Cases of 2011" of General Administration of China Customs.
  • Obtained re-trial from China Supreme Court in a judicial review of trademark opposition for an automobile maintenance product company. Only 10% of cases petitioned to China Supreme Court are granted with re-trial.
  • Obtained Well-Known Mark status for a number of American companies in trademark opposition proceedings in China. "Well-Known Marks” are generally granted with broader protection in China, but it is difficult for foreign brand owners to receive the recognition. Based on official data in 2012, 1,285 Chinese-owned brands were declared well-known by administrative authorities, but only 13 foreign brands made the cut.
  • Protected an American outdoor sportswear company from being sued for trademark infringement by advising a non-infringement declaratory litigation.
  • Achieved settlement for an industrial control company by successfully urging an international hotel to replace counterfeits of over $60,000.

  • Certificate of Legal Profession Qualification of China
