Joseph D. Brydges



Joe has a strong track record in representing clients in a variety of commercial litigation matters with a focus on distressed assets, workouts, bankruptcies, receiverships, and other insolvency proceedings. These include:

  • Contract disputes
  • Insolvency and collection matters, including foreclosures, replevin and bankruptcies
  • Negligence and intentional tort actions including fraud and theft by contractor
  • Permitting and regulatory matters before the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Department of Administration

Joe also serves as Co-Chair of the Michael Best recruiting and hiring committee.


Prior to joining Michael Best, Joe worked as a law clerk, assisting with legal research and civil and criminal jury trials. He also served as a research assistant and legislative aide within the Wisconsin State Assembly and interned with the Wisconsin Supreme Court.


A Circuit Court Victory

Joe was instrumental in winning a circuit court decision for a large dairy farming operation. The team successfully argued that a newly enacted Wisconsin statute prevented the Department of Natural Resources from imposing permit conditions that are not explicitly authorized by statute or administrative rule. The judge ruled in the client’s favor and the decision was picked up by multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press.

Obtaining Favorable Judgments in Circuit Court and Bankruptcy Court

Joe’s successful representation of a construction contractor client seeking to collect amounts due from insolvent companies or debtors before the Dane County Circuit Court and the W.D. WI Bankruptcy Court resulted in a judgment favorable to his client.

Settling Consumer Claims

Acting as local counsel for a national credit services company, Joe provided insight into local rules, practice and laws in cases involving consumer complaints under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and other consumer protection statutes. 

Mounting a Successful Permit Defense

Joe’s assistance in litigation aspects of an industrial dairy operation client’s defense of and challenge to permit conditions led to a victory at circuit court judicial review.

Successfully Prosecuting Patent Claims

Joe assisted summary judgment and trial litigation teams in prosecuting a patent marking case and claims for defamation and other state law violations. The direct sales manufacturer client prevailed at trial.
