Overview

Duncan is a registered patent attorney with nearly 20 years of combined in-house and private practice experience. He assists clients with obtaining, protecting, and leveraging intellectual property rights, including patent, trademark, trade secret, and copyright. His technical expertise encompasses electrical/computer technology, software, telecommunications, wireless devices, e-commerce, medical devices, and autonomous vehicles.

Duncan focuses his IP practice in the area of licensing and other transactions. He regularly drafts and negotiates inbound and outbound agreements relating to patent licenses, IP acquisitions and divestitures, SaaS licenses, joint software development agreements, cloud services agreements, data privacy agreements, and information security agreements, as well as terms and conditions for websites and mobile apps.

Prior to joining Michael Best, Duncan spent 12 years in-house as Senior Corporate Counsel at iHeartMedia, where he managed all aspects of the company’s intellectual property, including directing the company’s patent strategy, drafting and negotiating complex software and patent licenses, and guiding software development teams from inception to launch. Prior to this in-house role, Duncan was an associate at several large law firms in Washington, D.C., where he gained experience in intellectual property litigation, prosecution, and portfolio management.

Before becoming an attorney, Duncan was an officer in the U.S. Navy serving as a Nuclear Propulsion Plant Watch Officer onboard an aircraft carrier, as well as an instructor of Thermodynamics at the U.S. Naval Academy.
