Derek represents for-profit, nonprofit, and Fortune 500 companies in developing and executing a variety of public relations, government relations, and multi-state legal strategies. With deep experience in both federal and state government, including serving in the Utah House of Representatives, he brings a unique and informed perspective to his role as a principal with Strategies.
Prior to joining Strategies, Derek served as national vice president of government affairs and strategy for 1-800 Contacts, where he managed the company’s national government affairs, overseeing all employees and state and federal vendors and company strategy throughout the country. Derek also served as deputy chief of staff to Senator Mike Lee, which included managing the senator’s offices in Utah. He served as general counsel to U.S. Senator Robert F. Bennett in Washington, D.C. Derek is skilled at working with companies to develop successful government relations, media, and public relations strategies.
Derek is a founding partner of Utah Policy Advocates, which represents both start-up and Fortune 500 companies in developing and executing successful public relations and government relations strategies.
He was also deputy chief of staff and Utah state director for Senator Mike Lee. In this position, he interacted with virtually every elected official in the state of Utah on Senator Lee’s behalf.
In 2010, Derek was elected to the Utah House of Representatives, where he served as vice chair of the rules committee, and also served on the House Business and Labor Committee, House Judiciary Committee, House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee, Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee, and as co-chair of the Occupational and Professional Licensure Review Committee. He served as legal counsel and business liaison for Senator Orrin G. Hatch, interacting regularly with businesses and elected officials in the state of Utah.
Derek practiced constitutional, appellate, and regulatory law with an international law firm in their Washington, D.C. office. He began his career as a law clerk for Judge Ruggero Aldisert of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
For more than a decade, Derek has taught courses in Communications Law and Ethics as an Adjunct Professor at Brigham Young University.
