Colin is a member of Michael Best’s Patent Post-Grant practice group, where he assists with post-grant patent proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Clients look to Colin for patent application preparation and patent analysis for mechanical, electrical, and biomedical technologies. His strong background in biomedical engineering informs his development of intellectual property strategies in these fields.

Colin’s patent analysis includes noninfringement studies, defensive studies, and validity investigations. Prior to joining the firm, he developed several biomedical designs, including a simulation device for medical schools to teach proper fracture reduction and casting techniques, a sling to expedite rehabilitation of shoulder injuries, and a smartphone application to diagnose anemia and other blood-borne diseases.

Notable matters include:

  • Multiple patent studies for a power tool and medical device manufacturer. Colin’s work for the client included conducting a validity investigation of a competitor’s patents and providing design alternatives to avoid patent infringement. He concluded his work by assisting with the preparation of an invalidity opinion to protect the client against a possible infringement claim by the competitor.
  • Invention analysis for a medical device company to prepare a patent filing strategy before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Colin’s work for the client entailed preparation of several claims to cover multiple aspects of the invention.
