When an NLRB director in Illinois made the decision last year to allow student athletes at Northwestern University to organize as a union it raised a lot of eyebrows.
The NCAA says it remains committed to providing its athletes with “the best support possible” after a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board blocking Northwestern University football players from forming a union.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) now prohibits players from earning income beyond their academic scholarships and nominal stipends that cover the cost of college attendance.
Monday’s decision conceded that the student players have a legitimate quarrel with the current system; that in many ways NCAA Division I football “does resemble a professional sport in a number of relevant ways”, most obviously that college football generates huge sums of money for individual schools.
