Michael Best Welcomes Timothy J. Engling

Timothy J. Engling has joined the Chicago office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP as a partner in the firm’s Transactional Group. Engling’s practice will focus on technology, private equity, venture capital, licensing, joint development agreements, strategic alliances, merger and acquisition support, financing support and general corporate matters. He manages, evaluates and audits patent and trademark portfolios and assists with acquiring intellectual property assets and rights.

 

Engling is a business attorney focused on all aspects of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, competition counseling, litigation avoidance, transactions, evaluation, and procuring, managing and enforcing intellectual property rights for a competitive advantage. Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, he is authorized to practice patent law in the U.S. and trademark law in the U.S. and Canada. He has 20 years of experience with intellectual property matters including preparing and prosecuting applications; rendering patentability, design around, patent validity and infringement opinions; analyzing use and registrability of trademarks; and negotiating and drafting patent, trademark and copyright agreements. Technologies include medical devices, consumer goods, software, internet applications, business methods, systems, vehicle components, plastic items, defense products, and green technology.

 

Prior to joining Michael Best, Engling was a principal at Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., and was previously a partner with Barnes & Thornburg LLP, both in Chicago.

 

Engling earned his Juris Doctor from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and his Masters of Law from John Marshall Law School. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as an aviation officer in the Gulf War.
