The European Commission will urge the European Council to grant Ukraine official status as an EU candidate country, though Portugal’s Prime Minister warned that such a move could create “false expectations.”

President Joe Biden said that the U.S. is exploring efforts to build temporary silos in western Ukraine to store grain.

Sanctions

The Treasury Department issued a general license about authorizing energy transactions. A Commerce Department official said that global semiconductor exports to Russia have fallen 90% since the invasion and shipments of all American goods have plunged 95% by volume, with aviation and aerospace exports down 99.9%.

A machine used in shipping Russian natural gas to Germany was sent to Canada for repairs but is now stuck due to sanctions.

Consequences

Russian government data shows that the number of people living below the poverty line has grown by 41% in Q1 of 2022.

A study by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air estimates that Russia earned about $97 billion in energy exports over the first 100 days of the invasion.

JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs will withdraw from handling trades of Russian debt. UniCredit’s CEO said it would be morally wrong to sell off its Russian unit.
