Biden Administration Set to Act on 'Forever" Chemicals
President-elect Joe Biden's campaign pledged to address the toxic group of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFASs, that are found in a range of products from firefighting foam to nonstick pans and food packaging. The chemicals are long-lasting in the body and the environment and are shown to lead to reproductive, developmental, liver and kidney problems, and possibly cancer.
According to his campaign website, Biden intends to designate PFAS as a hazardous substance and set limits on the chemicals in the Safe Drinking Act and speeding up research.
"The Trump administration was far more tolerant of chemicals and skeptical of laws passed by Obama," Paul Benson of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP said. "Biden's campaign was pretty clear that they're going in the other direction."
