Michael Best is pleased to announce the addition of Galen R. Mason to the Transactional Practice Group and Venture Best®, the firm’s team dedicated to matters impacting high growth entrepreneurs. He joins as a partner in the firm’s Chicago office.
“Galen has a strong reputation in the Midwest, and in Chicago specifically,” says Melissa Turczyn, partner and co-chair of Venture Best. “He is active in the Midwest’s venture capital and start-up scene and has served as a key proponent of increased activity in the region. His entrepreneurial spirit matches that of our current Venture Best team and our clients, and I look forward to adding him to our roster of talented attorneys.”
Mason focuses his practice on representing investors, emerging companies, founders, and management throughout all stages of the start-up lifecycle. This includes start-up formations, financings, growth stage employment, tax, intellectual property, and regulatory matters as well as exits. He also has extensive experience with corporate structure and transactions for high-growth companies and in matters impacting companies in their later stages of growth including commercial agreements, rapid and discreet dispute resolution, and secondary transactions.
Mason serves as a trusted adviser and partner for technology clients in a variety of industries across the U.S. and is adept at anticipating the needs of early stage companies in the throes of building their businesses. He frequently works with clients beyond the traditional attorney-client relationship, providing counsel on business operations, serving as outside general counsel, building out in-house legal teams, and helping clients grow their network by making connections to investors, board members, and other service providers.
“I’ve crossed paths with many Michael Best attorneys in the course of my career and they’re always top-notch. I’m thrilled to join their ranks and take advantage of the firm’s strong national platform to grow my practice,” said Mason. “I always approach early stage clients with a strategic plan for a successful exit and look forward to leveraging Michael Best’s deep bench of attorneys across practices to ensure that these companies build a desirable business for their buyers.”
Most recently, the firm added Marianne Dwight and Sharmila Kassam to the Transactional practice group in Austin, another key market for the technology and venture capital sectors. In March of this year, the firm added corporate attorney Drew Whiting in Chicago, who also focuses his practice on emerging companies, venture capital, and private equity.
Outside of his legal practice, Mason is dedicated to advancing start-ups and entrepreneurs in a number of additional ways. He co-founded Catapult Chicago, a nonprofit co-working space specifically designed for such entities. Mason is also a Managing Director of an active early stage venture capital firm.
Before making the move to Michael Best, Mason served as special counsel at Foley & Lardner LLP. Mason received his J.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review, and his B.S., cum laude, from St. Olaf College.
