Wisconsin Gets Funds for Clean Diesel Programs

To stimulate the State economy by creating jobs and to protect human health and the environment, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) awarded the State of Wisconsin $1.73 million in funding to support clean diesel projects and loan programs. The funds were authorized under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (“The Act”).

Those eligible for the funds are school districts, local governments, businesses, and truck owners and operators who plan to retrofit the technology on existing diesel vehicles to decrease emissions, replace old vehicles or engines with more efficient ones, or install equipment on diesel vehicles to reduce or eliminate idling of such vehicles.

EPA believes the awarding of these funds will not only serve to protect human health and the environment but will also create green jobs in Wisconsin and reduce the number of premature deaths, asthma and other health issues.

In addition to the $1.73 million already awarded to Wisconsin, the State can compete for a portion of $206 million for distribution among the states, local governments, non-profit organizations, and tribal agencies under the Act’s national clean diesel funding programs.

Details regarding how Wisconsin will allocate the funds among eligible projects will be forthcoming.
