David Cannon – the Consummate Professional

August 6, 1933 - July 26, 2011

The entire Michael Best family is saddened by the passing of our dear friend and longtime partner David Cannon.

David was a mentor to many of us, and an honored attorney and invaluable member of our community.  After starting at Cannon and Cannon with his brothers, Dave served as District Attorney for Milwaukee County and then was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 1969 to 1973. David was a leader in the legal community serving as President of the Milwaukee Bar Association and on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Wisconsin.  He was also an active alumni of Marquette University Law School which honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.  His leadership and dedication to Marquette Law School will be honored by a classroom bearing his name.

Dave joined Michael Best in 1973 to - lead and grow – the Litigation Practice.  Like his other positions, he led most by example.  He taught his litigators to do more listening than speaking, and to maintain integrity and honesty at all time.  He led by example, rather than edict, and showed us that the practice of law must be balanced with faith, family, and community.

Dave was a model for the legal profession and our community:  the consummately successful professional with enormous heart.  We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his friendship.  Our hearts and sympathy go out to his wife Carol and his children, Charlie and Courtney.
