Chicago, IL – Michael Best & Friedrich LLP’s intellectual property practice is three members stronger with the three recent additions of Intellectual Property attorneys in the Chicago office. Laterals Jeffrey H. Brown and Luke W. DeMarte made the move to Michael Best from another Chicago law firm while Jeffrey S. Ward made the move from the firm’s Madison office to its Chicago office in order to support the increasing needs of intellectual property clients.
Brown offers extensive experience counseling clients on a wide variety of intellectual property, entertainment law and business matters including trademark, copyright, trade secret, advertising and unfair competition issues. He assists clients with developing strategies to protect, exploit and enforce their intellectual property rights and represents them against allegations of infringement. He is experienced in representation of clients in contested proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and has participated in numerous transactions involving the acquisition, disposition and licensing of intellectual property and business assets.
Brown’s practice includes the representation of clients in the entertainment industry. He is ranked as a leading transactional entertainment law attorney by Chambers USA and is recognized by his peers as a Leading Lawyer in Arts, Entertainment & Sports Law.
Brown is a 1994 cum laude graduate of University of Wisconsin Law School. He received his M.B.A in 1994 from The University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.A., with high distinction and honors, in 1989 from The University of Michigan.
DeMarte is an associate concentrating in the areas of intellectual property and entertainment law. In addition to advising clients with respect to the protection and exploitation of their trademark, copyright and other intellectual property rights, DeMarte has experience in general commercial transactions and litigation. DeMarte counsels clients in a wide variety of industries, including retail, marketing, manufacturing, music, software and more. He received his J.D., cum laude, from The University of Illinois College of Law at Urbana-Champaign in 1999, and his B.A. from The University of Missouri in 1995.
