John Wilson is a partner in the Business Practice Group and a leading member of the firm’s Renewable Energy Group. He is also the coordinator of the firm’s Energy and Telecommunications Focus Group. His practice is concentrated in all aspects of public utility law including electric, natural gas and renewables. In particular, Mr. Wilson has extensive experience in obtaining regulatory approvals for construction and operation of utility infrastructure. In addition to his regulatory experience, Mr. Wilson has extensive transactional experience in the renewable sector, including the negotiation of power purchase agreements, asset sales agreements, construction and procurement documents, interconnection agreements, real estate leases and easements, and financing documents for renewable energy projects, including wind. Mr. Wilson has experience representing clients who have collectively developed approximately 1200 MWs of wind.
Prior Work Experience
Prior to Mr. Wilson's engagement at the firm, he spent nine years as an executive at Xcel Energy (formerly Northern States Power Company). Among other things while at Xcel, he was General Counsel of the Wisconsin subsidiary and Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs.
Honors and Recognitions
Mr. Wilson is recognized in the area of energy law since 2007 in The Best Lawyers in America, published by Woodward/White, Inc. In 2009, he was also acknowledged as a “Top Lawyer” in utilities law by Madison Magazine.
